Pickens County Georgia History

This area of northwest Georgia was inhabited largely by Native Americans until 1540. After DeSoto's arrival, Europeans flocked to the area. The French were the first to arrive, followed by the English in 1629.

James Oglethorpe organized a settlement, and in 1773 the territory was named Georgia, after King George II.

Pickens County Georgia was officially created in 1853. It was named after General Andrew Pickens. The city of Jasper was named after Sergeant William Jasper. Both of these men were Revolutionary War heroes.

Native Americans mined both marble and quartz in this area at least 5000 years ago. By the early 1900's, the marble quarries were in operation under the direction of Colonel Sam Tate. Marble continues to play an important role in the economic profile of Pickens County GA.

Pickens County GA is comprised of a number of close-knit communities scattered throughout the hills, valleys, streams and hollows of the area. The towns of Talking Rock, Tate, Marble Hill, Hinton, Blaine, Ludville, Nelson and Jasper each have their own identifiable story. Climate

Pickens County Georgia enjoys four distinct seasons, with lots of color from spring flowers to fall foliage. Summer can bring hot days, though a few degrees cooler than Atlanta and in winter we can see snow or ice, which usually only lasts a day or two. January temperatures average highs of 46° with lows of 27°. July averages are 85° and 64°.
 

Geography

The Appalachian Mountains, the oldest mountain range in the world, begin in Pickens County GA. Hikers can find some of the best general purpose trails in the state. Those who prefer to drive will enjoy magnificent fall foliage and beautiful vistas. Burnt Mountain is about 10 miles north of Jasper, and is a favorite destination for many. From here you can sometimes view the Atlanta skyline.

Jasper, Georgia

Jasper, GA, the county seat of Pickens County, was incorporated as a town December 22, 1857. The city was named in honor of Sergeant William Jasper of South Carolina, who died during the siege of Savannah during the Revolutionary War.
 
 In 1890, the marble courthouse in Jasper, Georgia was where citizens of Pickens County raised a Union Flag to protest Georgia's secession from the Union. The 1906 jail in Jasper GA has been restored and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The jail and other public buildings are faced with marble, Pickens' major resource.
 
 Jasper, Georgia is located on Ga. Highway #53 (Sam Tate Highway) with neighboring Georgia cities Tate and Talking Rock.
 
 Appalachian Technical Institute (formerly known as Pickens Technical Institute) is located in Jasper, Georgia.
 
 The Georgia Marble Festival, held in Jasper GA the first weekend in October, is an opportunity for visitors to tour the pit marble quarries, watch sculptors make marble pieces of art, enjoy arts and crafts, and be entertained by mountain music and country clogging.
