Appalachian Mountain Realty Guide To request information from all Fannin County Georgia Fannin County nestles in the foothills of the vast Chattahoochee National Forest in the Appalachian Mountain Range. Wildlife abounds in the many forests, rivers, lakes, and streams. Apple and peach orchards provide picturesque views through the valleys. The bright beauty of apple blossoms and wild flowers in the spring, the new life of young animals, the lush green of summer crops and forest foliage, the rust, gold, red, and green of autumn leaves and apples, and the strength and simplicity of the winter landscape all combine to produce an ever-changing panorama of the land and its people. Fannin County was once a part of the not-too-clearly defined Spanish territory known as Florida. Cherokee Indians controlled the area today known as Fannin County when the first white settlements appeared. Unlike much of the rest of Georgia, Fannin County's first settlers did not come from the East, but from the north. Written accounts date these earliest settlements to 1790. Crossing the Appalachian Mountains to Fort Loudon (now Tennessee), the first settlers followed the Tennessee River south, where they took the Ocoee - Toccoa River to the wide, fertile valley that separates the Cohuttas and the Blue Ridge Mountains in Fannin County. Coastal Georgians began to push the Cherokee further west and this land was surrendered by the Cherokee in 1835 under the terms of the Treaty of New Echota. In 1838 the Cherokee were forced to leave in a travesty today known as the Trail of Tears. Fannin County was created in 1854 from portions of Union County and Gilmer County, with Morganton as the first county seat. Col. James Fannin, for whom the county is named, was a hero in the Texas War for Independence. Ordered by Sam Houston to pull back from a fortified position in Goliad, Fannin was surrounded by forces under the command of Gen. José de Urrea in the battle of Coleto. Fannin surrendered his force of about 400 men, who were later massacred. Come experience the beauty of the North Georgia mountains of Fannin County. Hike or mountain bike in the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Cohutta National Forests. Tube the Toccoa River or raft the wild Ocoee River. Ride the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. Trout fish our streams or pontoon on Lake Blue Ridge. Browse through antique, art and specialty shops in the historic towns of Blue Ridge and McCaysville. Epworth and Fannin County are nestled in the foothills of the vast Chattahoochee National Forest in the Appalachian Mountain Range, the area is abundant in natural beauty, from forests, rivers, lakes, and streams, to apple and peach blossoms, wildflowers, and all kinds of wild and domesticated animals.
