NC Government
Since its
incorporation in 1799, Ashe County NC has represented the best of what
northwestern North Carolina has to offer. Ashe County NC is
nestled comfortably in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Ashe County
experiences four distinct and beautiful seasons. Natives and visitors
alike relish the refreshing growth of spring and the long summer days
where the cares and worries of today’s fast paced life seem to drift
away on the soft evening breeze. Fall offers an unmatched patchwork of
splendid autumn colors as well as comfortable temperatures that draw
visitors from near and far who come to see Ashe County's natural
magnificence. Ashe County North Carolina winters are mild and
picturesque, touched with warm holiday cheer and pristine snowfalls,
which gently blanket the land. Traditionally grounded in agriculture
and manufacturing, Ashe County NC is populated with proud and hard
working folks, who will go out of their way to help their neighbors,
and who still value honesty and heritage. Our goal is to preserve the
wonderful qualities that give our County its strength, while remaining
current with technological and economic opportunities that constantly
shape the nation. We here in Ashe County hope that you will take a
minute to relax and look around
Ashe County's

offered by the local government. I trust that when you find time to
visit us, you’ll find that Ashe County is a serene place to visit, a
safe and stable place to raise a young family, or a relaxed and
intriguing home to adopt, in order to take advantage of that well
deserved retirement.

located in the Northwestern corner of North Carolina atop the Blue
Ridge mountains. It is a place of scenic views, small towns, and
welcoming people. Visitors to Ashe County NC come here for the
serenity of mountain cabins and the spirit of shared community. They
come to hike the hills, canoe the New River, and fish trout from
spring fed streams.
If you're looking to find elbow room and a slower pace of life, night
skies filled with a million stars instead of the glow of streetlights,
and to hear the music of whipporwill and hoot owl, then Ashe County NC
awaits you!

North Carolina’s
High Country
The High Country region, which covers Ashe, Avery and Watauga
Counties, has many different attractions to offer, and for this
reason, has become one of the nation's top tourist destinations. This
reputation as a wonderful spot for vacationers, pleasure-seekers and
for those who just "want to get away from it all", however, is not a
new one: People from all area's of the country have been making the
trek to the beautiful Blue Ridge for over a century. While some new
modern conveniences and attractions have been added over the years,
many of the top scenic attractions here have been in existence for
eons. Grandfather Mountain, the Linville Gorge, the Blowing Rock, the
region's numerous breathtaking waterfalls, rivers and streams, and the
grand views of the Appalachians themselves offer priceless moments and
memories that cannot be purchased at any cost - they must be
experienced.
North Carolina’s
High Country is a land of extremes. From the highest peak and the
deepest gorge east of the Mississippi, to the second oldest river in
the world, the High Country is not a land of mediocre proportions.
While Grandfather Mountain (5,694 ft.) and Beech Mountain (5,505) are
close runners-up, Mt. Mitchell at an impressive 6,684 feet is the
highest mountain in the east. Located just off Milepost 355 on the
Blue Ridge Parkway, south of Spruce Pine, Mt. Mitchell is part of the
billion-years-old Black Mountains. It is named for Dr. Elisha
Mitchell, a science professor at the University of North Carolina who,
in 1835, made an excursion to the High Country to measure the mountain
ranges. In 1915, a bill was introduced in the state legislature
establishing Mount Mitchell as the first state park.
Today, the 1,855 acre state park offers camping, hiking, horse trails,
picnicking, an interpretive center with exhibits on the park’s
history, geology and wildlife, a seasonally-operated concession stand,
gift shop and restaurant and an observation tower that offers
panoramic views of the valleys below and mountains beyond.
Additionally, rangers hold regularly scheduled educational and
interpretive programs about Mount Mitchell State Park.
Just an hour North of the highest mountain is the deepest gorge in the
East, Linville Gorge. The gorge is formed by Jonas Ridge to the east
and Linville Mountain on the west and is bisected by Linville River
which begins on Grandfather Mountain and extends for some 12 miles
through the gorge.
Elevations range from 4,120 feet on Gingercake Mountain to 1,300 feet
at Linville River. Rock formations situated on Jonas Ridge include
SItting Bear, Hawksbill, Table Rock and the Chimneys. Several of these
ridges provide hiking and camping opportunities for beginners and
intermediates, while the advanced outdoorsman may prefer the challenge
of the Wildnerness below.
The Wilderness contains an abundance of animals including deer, bears,
racoons, vultures, owls, hawks and trout and plant life including many
rare species of fauna and virgin forests. It is ideal for primitive
recreation and is a popular spot for serious hikers, backpackers and
rock climbers--there are no shelters, campgrounds, restrooms or trail
signs. It is recommended that only the most experienced adventurers,
with adequate equipment, compass reading skills, and survival skills,
tackle the depths of the Wilderness. Hunting and fishing are allowed
during season.
Just North of Linville Gorge are the headwaters to a river with it’s
own claim to fame. The epitome of an oxymoron, the “New River,” is
actually the second-oldest river in the World--second only to the
Nile. In 1998, President Clinton designated the New River as an
American Heritage River on a ceremony on its banks in the High
Country.
The New begins near Blowing Rock and terminates in West Virginia. The
river’s shallow, gentle waters and mild rapids are perfect for
beginners, families and groups, but even expert paddlers return again
and again experience the river’s beauty and tranquility.
New River State Park offers three access areas that total more than
1,700 acres. Each area provides a canoe-in primitive campground with
tables and grills. Additionally, visitors can fish for muskellunge and
trout fishing is excellent in the smaller, faster tributaries, most of
which are designated general trout waters and are stocked regularly
with rainbow and brown trout. Anglers need a state fishing license and
should obey the regulations of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
The Park also offers hiking trails and picnic spots and holds
regularly scheduled educational and interpretive programs about New
River State Park.
Whether climbing to the top of Mount Mitchell, descending into
Linville Gorge, or floating down the New, each of our natural wonders
offers unbelievable views and an unforgettable experience that will
satisfy the curiousity of beginners and provide ample challenges to
even the most advanced adventurer.
